The second image shows just one of a multitude of steps that the whole painting process took.
Four feet X five feet is a large painting. I kept a photo diary of the entire process from building the canvas to the final paint stroke. From a piece of canvas and sticks of wood to a finished painting that is bigger than life. The process took over 100 hours and was a labor of love. Barkley is the wonderful dog who the painting portrays. You can see her spirit shining through.

About This Painting:
Airedale owners often see this almost abstract perspective when their Airedale wants something. You can be asleep and the the nose and eye appears right over your head. When you love an Airedale their curly fur, their intelligent eyes and their wandering nose are a big part of how you experience them.
I love painting things that are neither totally abstract nor totally realism. Nothing against either style but they aren't interesting to me. But there is a place between the two where abstract and realism come together to create something that is totally different, an organic rendering that seems to create its own life. In this painting I wanted three things to stand out: the curly Airedale hair, the intense soulful Airedale eye and the impressive Airedale nose. Had I created a Picasso like abstract painting, the nose might have been below the eye. Perhaps I will try that another day. But right now that place bordering realism and abstraction calls to me.

I read this story years ago and I still remember it.
A little boy asked to pet a woman's dog. When he did he looked into the dog's eyes and then turned to the woman and said: "Did you know you can see the whole world in the eyes of your dog?"
The woman looked and in the brown large eyes she could see reflections of herself and her environment. How profound that you can see your whole world in the eyes of a dog.
